What happens in a silent abortion?
One in four women will suffer the devastation of a pregnancy that ends in a miscarriage. Many of them had already had a positive pregnancy test on their hands and even saw the blinking of a heartbeat on an ultrasound. But what about miscarriages that initially go unnoticed without symptoms or signs? What is a silent abortion?
A silent abortion has also been called a miscarriage, especially since you will not experience the usual red flags of cramping or bleeding that are associated with the most common abortions of pregnancy. The devastating news is often discovered when you go to your first ultrasound and a fetal heartbeat is not detected.
Because heavy bleeding is not experienced in a silent abortion, it is important that a woman's body be completely free of all tissues associated with pregnancy. Dr. Miranda Graham says that in these cases, the process often requires a medication that induces uterine contractions and helps to expel this tissue. If the medication is not successful, dilatation and curettage may be necessary.
It does not hurt to ask: Can this type of abortion be prevented? Unfortunately, like most miscarriages, silent abortions are often the result of genetic abnormalities and therefore, it is out of your hands. However, if you have suffered multiple spontaneous abortions, then it is definitely time to talk with your doctor about deepening the answers and to be able to support you to decide if it is good to seek a new pregnancy or if it is best to stop.
No matter your situation, abortion is a painful journey that you should not walk alone. Lean on the friends, family and advice of the moms who have been there.
